Lesson 5: The Final Piece of the Puzzle

In this "Album Alchemy" mini-course so far, I've shared 4 steps to making more quality music in the next 3 months than you usually do in 1 year.

Today, I'll give you the final (crucial) piece of the puzzle.

Because you could take all 4 steps and still get stuck, overwhelmed and give up before you finish anything...

Then beat yourself up and believe you're not cut out for this.

I promise that if you're still making music after just one experience of getting stuck...

You ARE cut out for this.

By not giving up immediately, you have what it takes.

Getting stuck, overwhelmed, or demotivated is almost inevitable if you believe certain "unquestioned truths" about creativity and making music.

These unfortunate assumptions are programmed into us by:

schools
colleges and universities (INCLUDING the best ones)
courses
podcasts
books
YouTube tutorials
top musicians and artists

...and lead to a creative process which is extremely hard and slow (at best) and impossible (at worst).

"But Mike, if top artists make amazing music with these beliefs and practices, aren't they right?"

This is survivorship bias.

It ignores the millions of artists who failed due to these beliefs and practices...

And it assumes that top artists can't improve!

From coaching top artists myself, I've found their success is down to luck or some other variable.

They make great music despite their beliefs and practices, not because of them!

As this mini-course is focused on steps to take, I won't write an essay on the many beliefs and practices that make the creative process unnecessarily hard, slow and painful.

Instead, here's the final step, which all of the other steps I've shared this week rely on:

Use a systematic method which works WITH your psychology, not against it.

Here's the simple truth:

Most musicians, songwriters, composers, and producers employ a creative process that ensures they're constantly in a battle against themselves.

This isn't your fault.

It's simply what you've been given.

If you've ever:

Worked on a piece for hours, only to realise what you initially had was better...
Wondered why you love the track one day and can't stand it the next (or vice versa)...
Got stuck in the loop...
Experienced Creative Block...
Have a fear of the blank canvas...
Not known what to do next to develop a track...
Worked on a track which keeps turning into a different track...
Felt like you're trying to force a track because it wants to do something else...
Had a great idea, got obsessed with details, and then lost interest...
Struggled to create a decent follow up after completing a great song...
Got scared of ruining a good idea...

All of these are signs that you're working against your own psychology.

(There are MANY more.)

You might look at some of these examples and think:

"But Mike, isn't this simply what the creative process is?"

Case closed.

This is the belief system I'm asking you to question. 🤓

Now, you could spend years figuring out your systematic method - just as I have...

Or you could just use mine.
